Tough decision. Your child is struggling with reading and you know he or she needs help. So many options. How do you find the best reading tutor? It depends on your goals.

It’s important to find the right reading tutor who knows how to fix your child’s or teen’s reading or test-taking problems to meet your goals and not waste time and money without results.

Do you want only homework help so your child can hand in the assignments on time? Or do you want your child to be an independent reader so he or she no longer needs your help or the help of a tutor. If you want your child to be able to read well, keep up with assignments independently, or rise to the top of the class, then you want to consider thinking about filling in any gaps in your child’s reading so he or she no longer needs tutoring help.

How do you fill in the gaps? First, you need to know what those gaps are. Is the child having reading comprehension problems? Maybe your child cannot even read the words correctly without mixing up letters, skipping parts of the word, or guessing wrongly. Maybe your child has a fluency problem. Or is the problem that your child is being taught in a learning style or brain style that is not his or her best. There are many causes of reading problems. The key is to have a reading diagnosis from an expert trained reading specialist to find the cause of the problem. Only then can you fill in the reading gaps to help your child be an independent reader without needing more reading tutoring.

You also want to make sure that when your child is being tutored that it is in his or her best learning style and brain style. Is your child a kinesthetic learner? A tactile learner?: A visual learner? An auditory learner? Or a combination? Does your child prefer right-brain learning strategies or left-brain learning strategies?

It makes a difference when your child is tutored in reading in his or her best learning and brain style. It accelerates learning, it is easier, and your child is happier and more successful.

The key is to find a reading tutor who can diagnose the reading problem, find your child’s best and fastest learning and brain style, and then fix the problem by teaching the needed skills in the shortest possible time. This is the formula for taking your child from struggle and frustration to becoming a successful reader who no longer needs tutoring help!
